Glitter Dust at Brisbane International Film Festival

Our co-director boarded a plane a couple of days ago, for today is the opening night of the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) where Glitter Dust: Fidning Art in Dubai will have its Australian premiere. And for those who cannot go, we promise to bring back baby koalas! In eucalyptus-lined steamer trunks so they will be very comfortable.

Glitter Dust screens this Sunday, November 18th at 11:45 AM. We’re really pleased Glitter Dust has been programmed with The Love of Books: A Sarajevo Story. The film tells of a library director and a group of dedicated bibliophiles saving ancient Islamic manuscripts under artillery shells and sniper fire. Such an interesting complement to all that glitters in Dubai and underneath, the universal struggle to nourish art and culture.

Glitter Dust at Red Wasp Film Festival

We’re very honored to be screening our film in at the 10th annual Red Wasp Film Festival in Texas! Many thank yous to Krista May and the Brazos Progressives for their sponsorship and support. And to Danielle of the Brazos Dance Collective, who served as a consultant on the film. Of course it’s an honor just to be nominated but we really, really, really want one of those red wasp awards. Coolest trophy ever. Just look how happy it makes people:

Glitter Dust: Finding Art in Dubai has been selected to be in the UAE National Film Library and Archive. As a film archivist in a former life, the UAE National Film Library is near to my heart, and it’s an honor to be included. The library and archive will include films by Emerati filmmakers, as well as films “about the UAE and/or produced by UAE residents and corporations.”

A city can get into you. It’s a basic need to be tied to land. And if your land is concrete or in the sky, that becomes part of you. Both of my films have been about places full of glass steel that reach to the sky. I remember coming back from Dubai to my hometown, Washington DC, and being so shocked that the Washington Monument was so small. It looked like a nubbin. And now a year later, I have a feeling that the monument has grown taller. It really has, but only an idea that grows inside of me. We’re getting ready for the fall film fest season, time to leave DC again and share Dubai with you!

JIFF Withdraws Two Films

When we heard that 2 films were withdrawn from JIFF, we were like, “inquiring minds (ok, nosy busy bodies) want to know!” Is there some sort of scandal?! As it turns out, it’s good news: Isreali films The Cutoff Man and Fill the Void were accepted into the venable 69th Venice Film Festival! Congratulations! And so they had to withdraw from JIFF, pesky premiere statuses and all. JIFF is very gracious about the entire thing, and slotted two interesting films in their place – Bernie and 7 Days in Havana. If this means we get to watch Richard Linklater, Benicio del Toro, Shirley MacLaine, Elia Suleiman, Gaspar Noé, and so on and so on, we will suffer gladly. At the end of the day it’s about making and supporting great films and everyone (The Cutoff Man and Fill the Void teams, JIFF and Venice) succeeded.
